What is the role of the various additives used to synthesize the drilling mud while a drilling operation? Drilling mud additives are being used to assure the success of drilling and maintain stability throughout the operation. Someone may say drilling fluids are designed to solve or minimize many drilling problems.From the early stages of the first drilling fluids to the sophisticated contemporary systems, drilling mud has been the heart of drilling operations. Its circulation circuit, required functions and chemical composition are presented.My goal for this thesis was to prepare a document that could serve as a short guide for drilling mud purposes and composition. For the most part, I oriented the review towards the role of drilling mud additives and their contribution to mud properties. I chose to discuss each item in this review in the order in which it is encountered in any other book with relevant content.
