Lignite's history is binded to history of the modern Greece. First exploitations started at early 1800 and today more than 50% of the country's electric power is generated through their combustion. Greek lignite was made mostly at Neogene basins and it is being excavated at two big lignite centres, at NW Greece and at Megalopolis. Poor quality of the greek lignites never occured the operation because of its very big reserves. Of course, there are a lot of green house emitions and because of that, the hole operation needs conservation and an upgrade if it is to be part of the county's energy plan for the years to come.
