Περίληψη
This diploma thesis focuses on the study of jadeite and nephrite, two different minerals, that until 1863 were considered as the same due to their similar appearance. Jadeite, a mineral of sodium, aluminum and silicon, belongs to the pyroxene mineral group, while nephrite belongs to the amphibole group and consists of magnesium, calcium, iron and silicon. They are two quite hard minerals that occur in nature in a variety of colors. Because of their great toughness, they were used in the past for creating tools, weapons and jewelry by many cultures in China and Southeast Asia, as well as by Native American tribes. Nowadays they are mainly used for jewelry and carvings. The largest occurrences of nephrite are located in China, Korea, Siberia, Australia and North America, near the contact of serpentinites or dolomitic marbles with other metamorphic and igneous rocks. In contrast, jadeite is rarer and occurs mainly in the form of veins and lenses within serpentinites in Myanmar, Japan, Guatemala and California.
