This diploma thesis explores the central role of critical metals in driving the clean energy transition. In particular, the urgency of this transition is described in the light of the international literature, the importance of critical metals such as rare earth elements and lithium is highlighted and the associated challenges are examined, including environmental concerns and geopolitical complications affecting availability. The study also explores the changes that need to be made and the initiatives that need to be taken at the regulatory and policy level to achieve the goal of sustainable development, while also highlighting the importance of international cooperation.
